It used to be that a household pet meant a cat or a dog, or perhaps a goldfish. But pet birds,
also known as companion birds, are becoming much more popular these days.
Pet birds come in all sizes, from the huge macaw and parrot to the smaller canary or parakeet. You won't find exotic birds like the flamingo or the bird of paradise in any pet stores though.
Companion birds aren't difficult to keep, and don't require too much in the way of bird supply. A properly sized bird cage, bird food or bird seed that is right for your species of bird and plenty of bird toys is all you need to get started. You might want to subscribe to a good bird magazine too. Each type of pet bird has its own care instructions, so do some research before you rush out to buy a bird.
